How it works
Community solar, in plain language.
You keep your current utility. You don't install anything. A local solar farm produces power for the grid on your behalf, and the credits show up on your existing bill — for less than you'd otherwise pay.
- 1
Subscribe to a local solar farm
Through a state-authorized program called community solar, you subscribe to a share of a solar farm built in your region. There's nothing to install at your home and no change to your existing electric service.
- 2
The farm produces power for the grid
Every month, your share of the farm generates clean electricity that's delivered to your local utility's grid — the same grid that already powers your home.
- 3
Credits lower your existing utility bill
Your utility applies solar credits from your share directly to your monthly bill. You pay a discounted rate for those credits, and the difference is your savings — typically around 10–15%.
Because there are no panels on your roof, it works whether you own or rent. You just need to be the person whose name is on the electric bill.
